Week 2 preview · Season XVIII

Everyone Is 1-1 Or Nobody Is

Six games, four of them between teams on identical records, and the first week where we can see what everybody learned. Nineteen starting slots have moved since week one. Two managers moved nothing, for opposite reasons.

Before a ball is thrown

180.80 against 189.36

The two biggest scores in the league, in a fixture that owns a record

Orvieto put up 180.80. Dinsky put up 189.36, the 49th-best score in eighteen years. They now play each other, which is the schedule doing you a favour.

It is also a fixture with previous. In week nine of 2019 Orvieto beat Dinsky 180.42 to 54.60 — a margin of 125.82, still the second-widest in league history and standing for seven years now. Nothing since has come close to it.

Both men have moved people, in opposite directions. Dinsky has finally benched Kyle Pitts, who returned 0.00 from the tight end slot in a 189-point week, for Hunter Henry. Orvieto has benched Zay Flowers, who scored 26.00, along with Chris Godwin, and promoted Malik Nabers and Stefon Diggs from a bench where they had gone 12.90 and 15.50 without being asked.

  • Orvieto leads the series 10-5, but Dinsky has taken the last two, including 114.64 to 91.14 in week thirteen last year.
  • Derrick Henry, Lawrence, Flowers and Likely all reached 26 for Orvieto in week one.
  • Caleb Williams was the highest-scoring player in the league last week at 41.26. Dinsky got his 189.36 with Pitts at 0.00 and Dicker at 2.00.
  • Combined projection 267.42 on a 51-49 split — the closest game on the board. Their 2019 meeting produced 235.02.
Twenty-seven meetings and one win between them

Hart has finally started Brock Purdy

Hart won week one by 43.98 and managed the worst lineup in the league doing it. His two highest-scoring players never took the field. Jalen Coker caught eight of nine for 138 and two scores — 33.80, more than anybody on his roster — and Brock Purdy put up 27.10 at quarterback, while Bo Nix started, fumbled three times and returned 4.44. Optimal eleven: 197.10. He started 135.84 of it, 68.9% efficiency, in a week where every other manager in the league cleared 86%.

Both of them start this week. Nix sits, Courtland Sutton's 4.10 and RJ Harvey's 8.10 go with him, and Blake Corum takes the flex. The projection has noticed: 148.41, the highest figure in the league and ten points clear of anyone else.

Yim has moved one man. She scored 176.46 without a single starter reaching 25 — eight of eleven in double figures, a defense that scored a touchdown, a tight end who caught two more — which is the most repeatable line anybody produced. DK Metcalf's 8.00 is the only thing she saw a reason to change, and Deebo Samuel takes the slot.

Figures are week one. scored on the bench.
  • Twenty-seven meetings, tied with Hart–Geenen for the second-most of any pairing. Hart leads it 14-13.
  • Two of the twenty-seven were in the playoffs. Both managers are 1-0.
  • Widest margin in the series: 80.42 — to Yim, 2021 week thirteen.
  • Hart 59%, the biggest edge on the board. He beat her 167.90 to 93.08 in week two last year.
Second game, second fixture that has never happened

Schmidt keeps meeting people for the first time

Schmidt's first game in the League of Champions was the second-closest ever played. His second is another pairing with no history at all — nobody has worn the Nashville Nights colours against the Jabronis before.

He is 1-0 and went 3-8 on the all-play getting there, which is the most fortunate possible start. Javier is 1-0 having actually earned it: 155.56, fourth-best in the league, and the second-best managed lineup of the week at 93.9%.

Both are sitting on a quarterback problem and neither has touched it. Javier started Lamar Jackson for 25.96 and left Jaxson Dart's 31.60 and Jordan Love's 22.48 on his bench; all three are exactly where they were. Schmidt has Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, can play one, and has again chosen Allen — who gave him 38.66 while Mahomes scored 25.66 sitting down.

Schmidt joined for Season XVIII. Every fixture is one he has never played: this is the second of eleven.
  • Javier 54%, and a projected margin of 6.12 — the second-widest gap on the board.
  • Jeanty went 32.70 on 23 carries and two scores in week one.
  • One change each. Schmidt swaps Makai Lemon's 2.50 for Keenan Allen; Javier swaps the Raiders defense, which gave him 15.00, for Tampa Bay.
  • Sixty-six pairings exist in a twelve-team league. The Nights have had two of them to themselves.
Fifteen meetings, one win apart

Fifteen games and one win between them

Dave C leads Zoz 8-7. They have traded the last four — Dave C, Zoz, Zoz, Dave C — and the closest of the fifteen was decided by 0.90, in a series where the widest either has ever managed is 61.

Both lost in week one, and both lost to somebody who scored a lot: Dave C ran into Dinsky's 189.36, Zoz into Orvieto's 180.80. Between them they scored 269.52 and went 0-2, which is the schedule being rude.

Zoz has responded by promoting the two men who outscored his own starters from the bench: Devaughn Vele's 19.90 and Matthew Golden's 15.50 come in for A.J. Brown's 5.60 and Jordan Mason's 11.90. Dave C has responded by starting Drake Maye again. Maye threw three interceptions for 11.82 while Tyler Shough put up 27.20 on his bench, and Shough is still sitting there.

  • Zoz went 7-4 on the all-play in week one and still lost.
  • Swift went 32.40 with three touchdowns for Dave C and it did not matter.
  • Montgomery: 28.90 and three total touchdowns for Zoz.
  • Zoz is favoured at 52%, which is about as close as a projection gets to admitting it has no idea.
Four changes against none

Gosling has rebuilt the two slots that cost him the game

Gosling lost by 0.14, the second-closest result in eighteen years, and the margin came out of the two slots nobody thinks about. Harrison Mevis kicked for 1.00. The Chargers defense gave him 1.00. Both are gone: Evan McPherson kicks this week and San Francisco plays defense.

That is two of four changes, and four is more than anyone else in the league has made — Michael Wilson's 10.60 and Sherwood's 4.00 are out as well. Across twelve clubs only nineteen of 132 starting slots have moved at all, and Gosling owns four of them.

Drew has changed nothing, and has an argument. He managed the best lineup in the league in week one — 94.8% efficiency, which is another way of saying there was nothing on his bench worth starting — and lost by 25 anyway, because Matthew Stafford returned 4.10 at quarterback. Stafford starts again.

  • Drew leads the all-time series 6-5 and has won three of the last four regular-season meetings.
  • They last met in the playoffs last season, a game Gosling won 147.90 to 126.30 on the way to a final he lost by fifty.
  • Gosling's 126.72 was the third-lowest score of the week. He lost by 0.14.
  • Drew is favoured at 53%. The projections separate these two by 3.71 points.
Lowest projected total on the board

Somebody has to win this one

260.70 combined, the smallest number of the week and twenty-two points below the Hart–Yim game. Ghost scored 124.86 in week one and went 1-10 on the all-play. Geenen scored 91.86 and went 0-11.

Geenen has changed nothing. Not one of his eleven. That includes the Houston defense, which gave up 36 points and finished on minus one, and Ja'Marr Chase, who caught two of four targets for twelve yards. The only other manager who left his lineup alone is Drew, and Drew managed the best-run lineup in the league. Geenen managed the lowest score in it.

Ghost has made two changes, neither at a position that actually hurt him. Jordan Addison's 0.00 becomes Cooper Kupp, and Travis Hunter's 3.10 becomes Josiah Trotter at IDP. Gibbs, Kyren Williams, Judkins and Irving are all still there. He was ranked first post-draft and is still looking for his first win.

  • Ghost's two lowest scores against Geenen are the two most recent.
  • Ghost's 124.86 would have beaten one team in week one. It drew the one that scored 176.
  • Ghost 52%, Geenen 48%. Nobody is confident.
